Another Castle In New Jersey
For some reason I'm attracted to castles and churches as photo subjects
Just a little over two miles and four hours from kickoff of the Giants-Cowboys football game at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey I made my way to the Iviswold Castle, or simply known as the Castle on the campus of Felician College in Rutherford. This is the second castle in New Jersey I have photographed.
It was built as home in 1869 by Floyd W. Tomkins, a New York newspaperman and developer - obviously during a period when newspaper ownership was far more lucrative than today.
In 1887 it was purchased by David Brinkerhoff Ivison who greatly expanded the structure and gave it its current name. As you will see in the following photos, it is an expansive edifice. I took photos from every available angle to give you a better idea of what it looks like.
The campus has been home to Felician University since 1997. The Franciscans restored the building to its original condition. Many of the university’s administrative offices are now located here.
Bonus shot: I took a photo of Grace Episcopal Church, just steps away from the main entrance to the campus, because I thought the architecture complemented that of the castle.
Bonus shot 2: This is First Presbyterian Church, located in Rutherford’s downtown area.
