A Photo Tour Of The Ironbound
While some Newark NJ neighborhoods have deteriorated, the Ironbound withstands.
Bordered by railroad tracks - thus the neighborhood’s name - the area is rich in Portuguese tradition. English, Portuguese and Spanish are required languages to be hired in many of the restaurants and stores.
Street vendors are a common sight.
St. Stephen’s Church was built in 1874 for a German-speaking congregation Spanish and Portuguese are now the languages of choice during services
There are many Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound Most famous is the Iberia Tavern and Restaurant, a mainstay since 1926. The cuisine is Spanish and Portuguese and the wait staff is fluent in both, as well as English of course.
The Iberia’s small outside chapel.
A side view of the Iberia - overlooking patio seating.

Great pictures
My family is from the Ironbound section of Newark - also known as Down Neck. If you look at a map of Newark, this makes sense. The Ironbound was largely German, Polish, Hungarian and Slovak for many decades. I'm surprised you didn't get a shot of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church on Barbara Street. Nice work.
